Cell Types in Mesothelioma – The Biological Analysis

Mesothelioma Cell Types

Research in the field of sciences has revealed that there are three cell types that are associated with Mesothelioma cancer. Understanding the Biology of these cells can help in detection, analysis and further finding a cure of the cancer.

These three primary cell types are: Epithelial, Sarcomatoid and Biphasic. Treatment options and life expectancy can vary depending on the type of cells detected during laboratory tests. Since epithelioid cells and Sarcomatoid cells respond differently to certain therapies, cell type is often weighed when developing a treatment plan by a mesothelioma specialist.

Epithelioid Mesothelioma Cell

The most common type of Mesothelioma Cancer cell is epithelioid mesothelioma, which accounts to about 75% of all mesothelioma cases detected around the world.

Generally, this type of cell reacts well to therapy and provides better prognosis for patients than the other two types of cells, with an average lifespan of 12 to 24 months. As the Epithelioid cell accounts for most of the Mesothelioma Cancer cases, it also the most studied form of rare cancer cell as well.

Epithelial cells are found on four tissues of the body, on the surface of the skin, in the linings of hollow organs and blood vessels, and along the lining of internal cavities, including pleura, epithelial tissue is located.

The cells mutate and become cancerous when are exposed to a carcinogen, such as asbestos fibers. These cells have different shapes and can be seen in a singular or multiple layer form based on the location in which they are detected. In most of the locations the epithelial cells found in cube or columnar shape, in the case of linings of the lungs the cells are flat and allow molecules to pass through them.

The cells of Epithelioid Mesothelioma can have more than one nucleus and can be found in groups in round or oval form.

Sarcomatoid Mesothelioma

Sarcomatoid mesothelioma constitutes between 10-20 percent of all confirmed cases of Mesothelioma, this cell is the most severe and difficult to treat cell of the three types of cells causing Mesothelioma.

As Sarcomatoid cells are identified by their oblong and spindle shape, they are also called spindle or Sarcomatous Mesothelioma cells. Other than these identifiable factors, the Sarcomatoid cells often have multiple nuclei and large nucleus.

The Sarcomatoid cells resemble healthy cells of the body which makes them difficult to diagnose and treat. The Sarcomatoid Mesothelioma Cancer takes up to ten to fifteen years to develop in the victim, the target may witness different symptoms of the same based on where the cancer develops.

Biphasic Mesothelioma

A patient suffering from Biphasic Mesothelioma cancer can have tumor that contains both Epithelial Cells as well as Sarcomatoid Cells. The presence of both types of cell in the tumor results in different prognosis of the patient.

Patients having more Epithelial Cell will have better response to the treatments given in comparison to the patients that have Sarcomatoid Cells in their tumor. Although the Biphasic Cancer tumor consists of two kinds of cells, they have differentiated arrangements and can not be found in same location.

Rare Cell Types

Some Mesothelioma Cancer cells can be sub-types of Epithelial or Sarcoatoid Mesothelioma. These include Adenoid, Cystic, Papillary and Small cell.
